PROJECTS

Our schools are well-maintained, but upgrades are needed. A bond referendum allows us to take a strategic approach to addressing our building systems and infrastructure, while also taking advantage of state aid to cover a portion of the costs.

A BOND REFERENDUM WOULD ACCOMPLISH:

Question 1 – Facilities and Security Improvements Districtwide Would Benefit Every Student

Somerville High School

  • Renovate five science labs that are original to the 1970s building.

  • Renovate the auditorium to be a state-of-the-art space for student performances and community events.

Somerville Middle School

  • Add a new security vestibule and ADA lift for enhanced security and accessibility – giving all three district schools the security features that our community values.

  • Partial replacement of limited roof sections.

  • Add air conditioning and replace heating and ventilation systems in the auditorium and gymnasium to provide year-round comfort and energy efficiency in shared spaces. This is part of the district’s goal to gradually air condition more spaces across all three schools to provide comfortable learning environments and better ventilation.

Van Derveer Elementary School

  • Add a new security vestibule and office in the existing lobby for enhanced security – giving all three district schools the security features that our community values.

  • Renovate the multipurpose room to replace aging finishes past their useful life.

  • Add a new steel storage building to replace the current storage containers and to house athletic equipment and facilities storage needs for the fields located at Van Derveer.

  • Create a multi-sport turf field to serve the whole community with a varsity baseball field and opportunities for football, softball, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, and field hockey.

    • New underground drainage/basin and grading.

    • Also new fencing, bleachers, scoreboard, dugouts, bullpen areas, and warning tracks.

Question 2 – Transforming our High School and Athletics

Somerville High School

  • New 24,000-square-foot athletics building at the High School, featuring a full-size gymnasium and support spaces. The new gym would also bring the community together and provide our students with opportunities to learn teamwork, health and wellness, and build confidence.

    • Expand and enhance athletic opportunities for every student, as well as community and rec programs who want to use the space.

    • Improve scheduling of even more athletic events at the same time.

    • Seating for approximately 700 fans and could be used on nights and weekends.

    • Storage facilities to house athletic equipment.

    • New athletic training facility, team locker rooms, concession stand, and new Hall of Fame area.

    •  2,500-square-foot weight room.

** Question 2 can only pass if Question 1 passes. **
