The National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior Honor Society Chapter of the Somerville Middle School was granted its charter in 2002.  The purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship in students of Somerville Middle School.  These five characteristics are the criteria for acceptance into the Society.  The members are expected to be actively involved in the NJHS school activities and volunteer for monthly service  projects.

The NJHS carries out its annual fundraiser for Pennies for Patients, holds an annual Back to School Dance in October, and serves as guides for parents during Open House and Parent/Teacher Conferences.  Many of our members help during Van Derveer’s Holiday Shopping, the student/faculty basketball game, and the annual PBA pasta dinner for senior citizens.  Several bake sales are held and some of the raised money will go to scholarships for graduating eighth  graders.  Some members have also volunteered to tutor students who may need a little more academic assistance.  In the near future, we are looking forward to helping out with the PBA/teacher volleyball game, sponsoring a McHat Day fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House, and hosting our annual New Member Induction Ceremony.
